Abstract

814,408. Ratchet mechanism. BONAMINI, N. April 4, 1957 [July 5, 1956], No. 20790/56. Class 80 (3). (Also in Group XXII] Accurate step-by-step movements, relatively to a straight or curved bar 4, of a part such as a, machine tool carriage (not shown) are obtained by reciprocating one of a pair of taper plates 1, 2, the plates being held between a pair of spring collets A, B which are alternately clamped to the bar by means not shown, in sequence with the reciprocation, transverse to the bar axis, of the taper plate 1. The parts are mounted in a case 3 slidable along the length of the bar 4, the collets and taper plates being held in contact by a spring 5 or by a hydraulic bellows or the like. The plate 2 and collet B are fixed to the case 3. The collet A may be secured to the carriage of a machine tool and the bar 4 be fixed to the body thereof, the taper plate 1 then reciprocating between fixed stops on the machine carriage. At the commencement of a cycle the collet B is clamped to the bar 4 and the plate 1 makes a forward stroke to cause a small axial displacement of the collet A. The collet A is then clamped to the bar 4 and the collet B released so that as the plate 1 makes a return stroke the spring 5 displaces the case 3, collet B and plate 2 to follow up the displacement of the collet A. The collet A is then released and a fresh cycle may commence. In a modification the collet A is fixed and a step-by-step movement of the bar 4 is produced. In another modification the taper plates are mounted so that they do not bear directly against the collets. The spring collets A, B may be replaced by hinged clamps or other suitable components. It is stated that both collets may be opened to allow relative traversing, independent of the step-by-step mechanism, between the bar and collets. It is also stated that the extent of each stepped movement may be varied by changing the taper plates or by varying the stroke of reciprocation.
