855,447. Machine-tool details. HERBERT Ltd., A. Aug. 19, 1958 [Aug. 22, 1957], No. 26487/57. Class 83 (3). A work-holding device having opposite gripping-members 26 adapted to hold and index a workpiece, has a polygonal locating-member 11, 11a, associated with each gripping-member, and actuating-members co-operating with the locating-members to index the device through an angle equal to the angle subtending a side of the polygon. The work is held along the axis X-X, Fig. 6, between two rotatable gripping- members 26, which thus rotate in unison. Each of the gripping-members carries a polygonal member 11, 11a, Fig. 2 (gripping-members shown rotated into the plane of the paper), the member 11 engageable by an indexing-member 12 and 11a engageable by a locking-member 13. The members 12, 13 are slidable in guides and are pivotally-connected at their outer ends to the ends of a beam or lever 14. The latter is pivotally connected to a member 15, which may be reciprocated by pneumatic means. A complete reciprocation unclamps the gripping- members, indexes them through the polygonal angle (90 degrees), and reclamps. The spring- pressed detents 19, 22 hold the gripping- members against undesired rotation during indexing and when no workpiece is mounted therein.
