Class 20(2) An adjustable telescopic support or prop for use as a mine prop or for supporting shuttering, scaffolding, canal linings or the like, comprises an inner cylindrical telescopic part 4 and an outer telescopic part 18 carrying a casing 1 formed with inclined slots 19 which receive axles 14a on which are eccentrically mounted supporting and lifting pulleys 14 the profiles of which are adapted to the cylindrical shape of the inner telescopic part 4, the pulleys 14 being rotatable by means of cranks 15 to cause the inner part 4 to be lifted relatively to the outer part 18. The surface of the pulleys 14 are preferably provided with teeth. A reduction gear 16 may be provided between the crank 15 and the axle 14a of the lifting pulley 14 on one side. Two locking levers 3 are mounted eccentrically on axles 9 rotatable in bearings in the casing 1, each locking lever being provided with a gripping face comprising, as seen in side elevation, a curved portion 5 merging into a straight portion 6, and shaped as seen in plan to conform to the cylindrical surface of the inner prop part 4. The levers 3 resist any tendency of the inner prop part 4 to move back into the outer prop part 18 and as the load on the prop increases their curved portions 5 roll against the prop part 4 until their straight portions 6 engage the part 4. The portions 5, 6 are provided with teeth and the portion 6 may be given a friction covering of hard metal as by filling the gaps between the teeth with such hard metals. The axles 14a and the levers 3 may be acted upon by springs 17, 2 respectively. The levers 3 are maintained in supporting relationship with the inner prop part 4 by means of levers 10 which rest upon a rotatable shaft 12. To release the prop, the shaft 12 is turned by means of a lever 13 so that a cut-away portion on the shaft 12 permits one or other of the levers 10 to be deflected downwardly, thereby moving the corresponding lever 3 out of supporting relationship with the prop part 4.
