814,179. Washing-machine impellers. HENNELL, V. H. D. Feb. 5, 1957 [Dec. 20, 1955], No 36534/55. Class 138 (2). A washing-machine impeller (Fig. 1) comprises a disc-like element 1, one side of which has radial ribs 2, each of which has a flat face 3 which is inclined at an angle of between 80 and 90 degrees to the flat part of the disc, the inclined face forming the leading face when the impeller is rotated. Holes 4, between the ribs, permit liquid to flow from below the impeller and reduce vortices formed above it or may alternatively be used as fixing points for attachments to the impeller. The impeller (Fig. 3) is fitted in the depression 9 at the bottom of the tank 6 of a washing-machine and is driven by the shaft 5 of an electric motor, the bronze counterface 8 running against a seal 7. As the impeller is rotated, turbulence produced in the depression 9 causes water to flow through the holes 4 into the main body of the tank to agitate clothes contained therein. The Provisional Specification discloses a modification in which the axes of two opposite ribs instead of lying on the same diameter, are slightly offset from that diameter.
