A gate valve has a seat assembly comprising a moulded resilient member 37, Figs. 3 and 4, slotted at 17 to receive the gate 19, Fig. 1, and having end recesses to receive rigid, preferably metallic, ring members 41<SP>1</SP>. The assembly is located in the valve housing between the hubs 20 by a bonnet 18 and a cap 21, held together by two nuts and bolts 27, 28. The cap 21 and the bonnet 18 are located on the hubs 20 by ribs 22, 25 respectively, and the cap is secured by welding at 24. The member 37, Fig. 3, has annular lips 42 which are clamped against the flange 44 of the associated rings 41<SP>1</SP> by the bonnet and cap 18, 21. The two longitudinally extending lips 50 of the member 37, Fig. 4, are clamped between the cap and bonnet 18, 21. The hubs 20, Fig. 1, have annular recesses which receive sealing rings 47 which engage the outer flat faces of the rings 41<SP>1</SP>. A two-part clamp 29 fixed to the bonnet secures a nut 30 which engages the threaded part of the stem 31 of the gate 19. The nut 30 is rotatable by a hand wheel 33a to raise and lower the gate which has at its upper end two shoulders 48 which when the gate is in its closed position engage the crown part 49, Fig. 4, of the member 37 while the rim of the gate engages the surface 38 of the member 37, Fig. 3.
