Abstract

813,913. Controlling jet-propelled aircraft. CAILLETTE, G. Jan. 23, 1956 [Jan. 28, 1955], No. 2203/56. Class 4. [Also in Group XXI] In an aircraft adapted for vertical take-off and landing, means to ensure stability during such manoeuvres consists of the provision of two sets of jet-propulsion units respectively having resultant thrusts indicated in Fig. 1 by R 1 and R 2 so arranged that thrust R 1 coincides with the longitudinal axis of the aircraft and thrust R 2 is maintained vertical irrespective of the attitude of the aircraft and intersects the longitudinal axis at a fixed point O located a distance L forward of the centre of gravity position G of the aircraft. The wing is arranged so that its centre of pressure C is located a distance l aft of the point G. The thrust R 2 is maintained constant and the thrust R 1 is adjusted. Means for adjusting the thrust R 1 in dependence upon the cosine of angle a comprise a gyroscope 2 having pick-offs 3, 4 which feed signals to a summing amplifier 5, energised at 6, and adapted to supply control signals to solenoids controlling a valve 8 associated with pressure fluid accumulator 9 and a jack 11. The jack operates flaps 12 to vary the area of the jet pipe orifice and a feed back signal is derived at 13, 14 to control amplifier 5. Specification 740,696 is referred to.
