813,735. Viscometers. SHELL RESEARCH Ltd. Aug. 2, 1957, No. 24561/57. Class 106 (2). A viscometer comprises a first liquid container 1, a first body 2 free to rotate in the container 1, a second container 4 rigidly connected to the body 2 and a second body 5 mounted to rotate relatively to the container 4. Means are provided for rotating either the first container or the second body, for securing either the second body or the first container respectively, and for measuring the relative rates of rotation of either the two containers or the two bodies respectively. As shown, a motor 6 drives the second body 5 and the first container 1 is held fixed. Counters are used to count the number of revolutions of the two bodies in the same period of time and from this the viscosity of liquid contained in container 1 can be calculated if the viscosity of liquid in container 4 is known. Two other embodiments are described. In one, the first container 1 rotates and the second body 5 is held fixed, and in the other, the second container 4 and the first body 2 are formed as one closed cylinder and the second body 5 is rotated inside this cylinder by a magnetic coupling. The container 1 may also have an inlet and an outlet to provide a constant flow of the liquid being tested and the whole apparatus may be mounted in a thermostatically controlled enclosure.
