Abstract

813,680. Lightning arresters. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Dec. 20, 1957 [Dec. 24, 1956], No. 39596/57. Class 38 (4). A lightning arrester of the type comprising an assembly of spark gaps and resistor blocks contained in a tubular housing has the housing shaped so as to form channels whereby any gases evolved therein during operation are conveyed to the ends of the arrester, which ends are formed by frangible diaphragms which rupture upon excess gas pressures being formed in the housing. The assembly of spark gaps and resistor blocks 16, 17, 14, 15 is generally circular in cross-section and is contained in a tubular porcelain housing 11 the internal bore 12 of which is of non-circular cross-section, the projections 23, 24, 25 centering the spark gap/ resistor block assembly whilst the grooves 20, 21, 22 form passages along which any gases evolved during operation of the arrester are conveyed to the ends of the arrester. The ends of the arrester are closed by means of members 18, 19 which include frangible diaphragms 38. The diaphragms are secured to the ends of the tubular housing 11 and are ruptured when excess gas pressures are built up in the housing. Should only moderate pressures be built up therein the diaphragm 38 will move outwardly without rupturing but will be punctured by means of a member 48, having pointed ends, carried by the end closure member 19 only whereby a slow emission of gas may take place. The interior bore of the arrester housing normally contains nitrogen.
