813,561. Adhesion testing machines. SOUTHWICK, C. A. March 1, 1957, No. 6826/57. Class 106 (2). A machine for determining the characteristic of adhesion between a more or less porous material such as paper or cloth and coating material thereon comprises a clamp 44 holding a specimen on a support 26 over an orifice 20 of a closed chamber 18 to which air is supplied at regulated predetermined pressure for application to the specimen and a gauge 56 indicating the pressure in the chamber 18. The specimen is placed, with its coating uppermost, over the yieldable ring 26, which may be of rubber, and a lever 52 is operated to open a valve 50, so that air at, say, 50 p.s.i., determined by the setting of a pressure regulator 58 and indicated by a gauge 64, is admitted to the chamber 18 and to a cylinder 21. A piston in the cylinder 21 operates the clamp 44 to hold the specimen and air enters the chamber 18 through a nozzle with a small port taking 20 to 25 seconds for the pressure, as indicated by the gauge 56 to build up to its maximum. Air acts on the coating through the base material and any separation of the coating therefrom may be seen through an opening in the clamp. Valve 50 is closed to allow the pressure to exhaust from the chamber 18 and cylinder 21 to atmosphere so that the specimen is released for examination.
