Abstract

In the moulding of reinforced unsaturated polyester resins, the reinforcement which may be glass fibre mat, woven glass cloth, woven cotton or linen, paper or woven or unwoven asbestos, viscose or acetate rayon, polyamides, polyesters and polyacrylonitriles is first impregnated with a binding agent and a polymerization catalyst which may be a naphthenate or a peroxide, e.g. benzoyl or lauryl peroxide, before the application of the resin. The binding agent may be polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, a dry polyester resin or starch in water-soluble phenolic resin. Accelerators, e.g. dimethyl aniline and dimethyl-p-toluidine, and inhibitors, e.g. hydroquinone and ascorbic acid may be added to the polyester resin. The impregnating material for the reinforcement preferably includes an acid, e.g. glacial acetic acid. When the binding agent is used as a dispersion, a dispersing agent, e.g. triethanolamine oleate, and a stabilizer, e.g. methyl cellulose may be used. Mudguards may be moulded on a metal mould from pieces of the impregnated reinforcement.ALSO:A reinforcement for unsaturated polyester resins which reinforcement may be glass fibre mat, woven glass cloth, woven cotton or linen, paper or woven or unwoven asbestos, viscose or acetate rayon, polyamides, polyesters or polyacrylonitriles, is impregnated with a binding agent and a polymerization catalyst, which may be a naphthenate or a peroxide, e.g. benzoyl or lauryl peroxide, before the application of the resin. The binding agent may be polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, a dry polyester resin or starch in water soluble phenolic resin. Acceleraters, e.g. dimethyl aniline and dimethyl p-toluidene, and inhibitors, e.g. hydroquinone and ascerbic acid may be added to the polyester resin. The impregnating material for the reinforcement preferably includes an acid, e.g. glacial acetic acid. When the binding agent is used as a dispersion, a dispersing agent, e.g. triethanolamine oleate, and a stabalizer, e.g. methyl-cellulose, may be used. Mudguards may be moulded on a metal mould from pieces of the impregnated reinforcement.
