Abstract
812,751. Fluid bearings. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Dec. 20, 1956 [Jan. 5, 1956], No. 485/56. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] The shafts 13, 14 connecting the contra-rotating turbine rotors 30, 32 to contra-rotating compressor rotors 11, 12 are journalled in bearings 15, 16, 17. The inner shaft is enlarged at 13b to bear against the outer shaft through a gas-borne bearing to which gas, preferably pure oxidant, is supplied from the combustion chamber 26. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the two driving shafts are provided with fluid-borne thrust and journal bearings supplied with bearing fluid from a high-pressure gas generator which produces as a bearing fluid a low or medium temperature mixture of steam or gas. The gas generator produces a gas which is oxidant rich and the gas is cooled by water injection. Alternatively, water, fuel or oxidant could be used as a bearing fluid.
