Abstract

20,604. MacDonald, J. D. Sept. 25. Steam &c. turbines. - An outward - flow elastic - fluid turbine is shown in Fig. 1. The turbine - wheel 2 has rows of blades 3 on one or both sides interspaced among rows of fixed vanes 5 on the casing 1. Steam chambers 20 have contracting-expanding r.ozzles 21 which direct the steam on to the blades. The blades on one side may be arranged for reversed running, or a separate reversing turbine-wheel may be fitted on the shaft 8. The shaft rotates in sleeves 9 having spherical bearings in discs 12 to allow a self-aligning adjustment to take place. The chambers 14 surrounding the sleeves are filled with oil from a suitable supply. To allow the turbine-wheel to be readily inspected, the casing is made in halves, and one half casing has rollers 43 running in a track on the sole-plate 40 so that the casing can be withdrawn from the wheel. The shaft coupling between the turbine and the machine to be driven is supported between two bearings, one of which has a cover 50, Fig. 6, formed in halves which are mounted on hinges 51, so that by opening the bearing, the shaft can be slid axially. The turbine may be arranged as an inward-flow turbine. When adapted for use with combustion products, a combustion chamber 72, Fig. 9, is used having a double shell and a nozzle device 76 for the explosive mixture. An auxiliary air supply enters through circumferential apertures 84, and water jets 75 cool the combustion products before they pass to the turbine.
