Abstract

The method of applying dampening fluid to the cylinder of a printing machine as described in the parent Specification is modified in that the dampening liquid instead of being applied directly to the plate cylinder is applied to a dampening roller or one of the rollers of the inking mechanism. As shown, a lithographic printing machine comprises a plate cylinder 10, offset cylinder 11 and impression cylinder 12. Inking rollers 16, 17, fed from an ink fountain 18 and dampening rollers 25, 26, are provided. The dampening fluid is contained in a housing 22 in which a fog of finely divided particles is created by opposed nozzles 27, 28. A wire 19 is provided in a shield 23 to which the fluid particles gain access through an opening 24. The <PICT:0812746/III/1> wire 19 extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the roller 26. The wire 19 is charged to a high positive potential and the roller 26 is electrically grounded, so as to cause the fluid particles to be impelled towards the roller 26. Alternatively the dampening rollers 25, 26 may be dispensed with and the dampening apparatus provided adjacent the first inking roller 16, or the first roller 16 and the roller 17. In this case the rollers 16 and 17 are electrically grounded.
