Abstract
Radioactive phosphorus is separated from neutron irradiated sulphur by extracting the sulphur in the solid state in a finely divided form at a temperature at, or above, the temperature at which S is transformed from the rhombic to the monoclinic form with an aqueous extraction agent, and separating the residual S. The extraction may be with boiling water, and the P32 diffuses rapidly to the surface during the transition at 95.5 DEG C. A few drops of wetting agent, e.g. sec. octyl alcohol, may be added to the water. The S is filtered off and re-used, while the P32 solution may be concentrated by evaporation. If an organic wetting agent is used, the P32 solution may be purified to remove, or destroy, organic impurities, but with sec. octyl alcohol, this is unnecessary, as the alcohol distils off in the water evaporation.
