Abstract

812,192. Stranded cables. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Aug. 17, 1956 [Aug. 22, 1955], No. 25228/56. Class 36. Pairs of conductors with alternate reverse directional twists are produced by connecting each pair of wires with an insulating material while they are advanced longitudinally parallel with and spaced from each other, forming alternate twists in the pair of wires by twisting the connected wires alternately in reverse directions while the wires are advanced longitudinally spaced from each other, and holding the twisted wires against untwisting. Each pair of wires is fed through an extruder 9, Fig. 3, which joins the wires by a rubber or plastic insulating material, to a unit 8 which inserts twists in opposite directions in the wires. The unit 8 comprises a tube mounted on bearings 21 in a housing 17, a pulley 54 on the tube on one end of which is screwed a pair of jaws, one fixed and one movable by a spring-urged plunger to open the jaws, and a pair of rollers 55, spring-urged to hold the twist in the pair of wires. As shown in Fig. 2, the pulleys 54 are driven in alternate directions by a belt 78 passing over a pulley 77 rotated by a pinion 75 and gear 73 which is given an oscillatory motion by a link 72 attached to a rod 70 reciprocated by a heart-shaped cam 67 driven by an electric motor 62.
