Abstract

812,035. Radiographic apparatus. BERNAS, R. March 20, 1957 [March 21, 1956], No. 9099/57. Class 98(1) A device for holding radioactive material consists of two shielding plugs slidable along a duct in a body of shielding material and controlled by means fitted as an extension of the duct, and an auxiliary section also forming an extension of the duct, mounted for rotation about the axis of the extended duct and having a radial recess into which the radio-active material is brought when an exposure is to be made. As shown in Fig. 1, the body 23 consists of a shell in three parts 36, 25, 27 filled with heavy metal and mounted in journals 24 on a base 20. An extension 34, consisting of a metal-filled shell 35, has a flange 31 rotatable in a groove 32 formed between the flattened front face 28 of the body 23 and a flange 31 fixed thereto. A carrier 49 for the radio-active material is slidable along a duct 41 formed in the body 23 and the extension 34. As shown in Fig. 5, carrier 49 consists of a tube 50 with plugs 55, 60 at its ends. A receptacle 54 for the radio-active material is mounted in the tube between rods 51, 52 of heavy metal, e.g. tungsten. Plug 60 is formed with a coupling 61 whereby it may be connected to a flexible cable 67, Fig. 6. the coupling being surrounded by a sleeve 69 held in place by spring clips 71, 72. The cable 67 has a flexible sheath 68 connected to the rear of body 23. In the position shown in Fig. 1, the source is at the centre of the shielding mass. By means of the cable, an operator, from a distance, may move the source to a point 46 in the duct 41, on the axis of a conical aperture 44 in the extension 34. The source may be moved further into a tube 63 fixed to the extension 34. In a modification, extension 34 is separated from the body 23 and is mounted on a separate base, the source carrier moving from the body to the extension through a guide tube.
