Abstract
904,988. Handling radioactive materials. TECHNICAL OPERATIONS Inc. Oct. 19, 1960, No. 35843/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Groups XX and XXV] In apparatus permitting movement of a radioactive source 25 or 26 between a store 15 and an exposure control device 45 connectible through a flexible conduit 60 to a snout 90 where the source is utilized, e.g. for radiographic testing, both the store and the control device comprise lead shields 18, 48 having therein curved tubes 21, 56 respectively, the tube 21 being divided into two portions 21.5, 21.6 by a stop 22. Tube portion 21.5 may contain a new source 25 which is required in the snout 90 and portion 21.6 may be empty to receive an exhausted source. Each source 25, 26 is connected to a cable 27 or 28 having a length approximately equal to the tube portion 21.5 or 21.6, the other end of the cable carrying one part 211 of a detachable two-part connector 200 (see Group XXV), the other part 212 of the connector being attached to a cable 51 having its operating end extending through a conduit 50. To perform a source change the exhausted source 26 is drawn by the cable 51 from the snout 90 into the shield 48 through the conduit 60 and the latter is disconnected by a coupling 91 from the snout. The conduit 60 is then connected by the coupling 91 to the upper end of the tube portion 21.6 and the exhausted source is pushed by the cable 51 into that tube portion against the stop 22. The upper ends of the tube portions 21.5, 21.6 have spring- loaded parts (Figs. 3-6, not shown) which may be retracted to gain access to the connector 200 and accordingly the connector on the portion 21.6 is detached to free the cable 51. The conduit 60 is disconnected by the coupling 91 from the tube portion 21.6 and connected to the tube portion 21.5, the connector part 212 being connected to the part 211 within the portion 21.5 whereby the new source 25 may be drawn into the shield 48. Finally, the snout 90 is reconnected to the conduit 60 and the new source positioned therein.
