Abstract

812,030. Making gudgeon pins; jointing by forging. CONTINENTAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 17, 1956, No. 31614/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVI] A close fitting assembly of a sleeve 14 and a core 15 of higher thermal expansion than the sleeve is formed by heating the assembled sleeve and core to a predetermined temperature and upsetting both ends of the core on to the sleeve. The invention is described with reference to an engine gudgeon pin 12 wherein the initial core and sleeve are heated to 600‹ F. which is maintained for one hour and the core ends are then upset. After cooling to room temperature the core is machined to a predetermined length calculated from given equations. The core is stated to be tight within the sleeve through a temperature range of - 50‹ F. to 600‹ F.
