Classes 7(2) and 7(3) [Also in Group XX] The phase relationship between the time of commencement of fuel injection and top dead centre is determined by a stroboscopic device comprising a disc with a mark thereon rotated by the engine and a lamp 14. Fig. 2, illuminated intermittently when a make and break switch 3, 4, is closed by the injection pump push rod 6 at the commencement of injection, the phase of the impulses from the make and break 9 being adjusted by a phase adjuster 11 until the mark on the rotating disc appears to be stationary at a datum line representing top dead centre. The amount of the phase adjustment read off from the device 11 corresponds to the phase interval between injection and top dead centre. The circuit from the make and break 9 to the lamp 14 may include an amplifier such as a thyratron.
