Abstract
811,858. Screw-pumps. PFEIFFER, A., [trading as PFEIFFER, A. [Firm of]]. Feb. 1, 1957 [Feb. 2, 1956], No. 3678/57. Class 110 (1). A molecular pump comprises slotted rotor discs alternating with slotted stator discs, the slots of the rotor or the stator discs or both, having lateral bounding faces which are inclined in relation to the axis of rotation and form with the end faces of adjacent discs, wedgeshaped spaces tapering in the direction of rotation. In the vacuum pump shown, rotor discs 9 alternate with stator discs 10. A suction connection 4 is provided midway between two discharge connections 5. Slots 13 in the discs 9 are inclined oppositely to slots 15 in the discs 10. The slots co-operate with the end faces of adjacent discs to form wedgeshaped spaces 21, 23 which taper in the direction of rotation, creating a pressure rise in the spaces towards their apices. The circumferential width of the slots is such that they do not afford a free passage in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation. Preferably, the width of a slot is equal to, or slightly greater than, the width of the blank portion between adjacent slots. The slots in alternate discs may be parallel to the axis instead of being inclined, and in this case the inclined grooves of the other discs widen from the suction to the delivering sides.
