A drill rig comprises a central column a massive collar sliding on the column, a series of booms at least some having mountings for rock drills, mounted on the collar to radiate therefrom, means on the collar for raising and lowering the rig, and means whereby the booms are projected away from the column when the latter makes contact with the bottom of a shaft and towards it when the column is raised. As shown, a collar 5, slidable on a column 4, has sets of lugs 10, 11, each lug having a boom 6, 7 pivoted thereto, the booms 6 collapsing upwards and the booms 7 collapsing downwards. The rig may be raised or lowered in a shaft by means of a ring 14 on the collar and, on lifting, the column 4 moves downwardly with respect to the collar, a collar 12, fixed to the column and to which are pivoted the ends of rigid links 9 attached to the booms 7, causing the latter to collapse downwardly. Flexible links 8, e.g. of wire or chain, attached to the booms 6 are also fixed to the collar 12 and cause the booms 6 to collapse upwardly. The booms may have screw jacks 18 on their free ends and may carry adjustable mountings for rock drills 18. The rig may be held in the open or closed position by pins passing through holes 21 in the column 4 and collar 5. Pressure fluid to operate the drills may be supplied to manifolds 16, 17 located in boxes 19, 20 surrounding the collars. The extremity of the column 4 beyond the collar 12 may be adjustable for length.
