Class 85 [Also in Group XXIV] A portable drilling rig is mounted on a vehicle in which the drilling string is suspended for vertical movement from a straight line motion linkage and is driven by a motor at or near its point of suspension. The Scott-Russel type of straight line linkage may be used although a modified form is preferred (see Group XXIV). A jib 12 is pivoted at 13 to a frame 17 capable of moving fore-and-aft of the vehicle 10 about a pivot 15 as single or double acting hydraulic rams 27 raise and lower the jib 12. A drill string 38 passes through a guide 40 and is connected at its upper end to a hollow spindle 32 of an hydraulic motor 28 pivoted at 30 to the end of the jib 12 which moves approximately in a vertical straight line. Drilling fluid or compressed air is supplied to the drill string through a pipe 42, the fluid passing through the hollow spindle 32 of the motor 28. To add a new length of pipe the drill string is supported in the guide 40 by slips, the motor 28 disconnected from the string and then turned about its pivot 30 when the new pipe is connected to it (see Fig. 2, not shown), the jib 12 is raised until the new pipe is vertical and above the drill string when the new pipe can be connected, the slips removed and drilling continued. The rams 27 may be replaced by a screw jacks.
