811,540. Amplitude-modulation systems. COLLINS RADIO CO. Jan. 22, 1957 [April 12, 1956], No. 2302/57. Class 40 (5). In a single-sideband modulator a switch enables either sideband to be transmitted without adjustment of any filters or change in frequency of any oscillator. To this end an audio modulation fa may be mixed with oscillations from a stable oscillator 9 (frequency say fs) in a balanced modulator 6 followed by a sideband filter 7 before mixing again with a carrier frequency fc from oscillator 14 in a second mixer 8, a filter 15 of pass-band centred round (fc + fs) selecting only a single sideband (fc + fs + fa) for transmission. Also the stable oscillator 9 is multiplied, e.g. doubled, in frequency before subtracting the multiplied frequency from the carrier frequency in a third mixer 11 to derive frequencies fc + 2fs which on being connected by switch 12, 13 to the mixer 8 produces frequencies fc Π2fs Π(fs + fa), only fc + 2fs- (fs Πfa) of which can be transmitted by the filter 15, i.e. the other sideband. Sideband filter 7 ensures that in the transmitted wave the audio frequencies form a single sideband relative to the effective suppressed carrier frequency (fc + fs).
