Abstract

557,889. Frequency and phase modulation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. (Radio Corporation of America). July 7, 1942, No. 9436. [Class 40 (v)] In a frequency or phase modulation system, the modulated oscillations are applied together with an unmodulated oscillation of a different frequency to one end of a phase-shifting line, the other end of which is connected to a mixer to produce beat frequency currents for application to the load. As shown, a line-stabilized oscillator 17 is frequency modulated by a variable reactance 15 controlled through a suitable network 13 by the signal input 19. An unmodulated oscillation of different frequency is produced by a crystalcontrolled source 1 and after frequency multiplication at 3 is applied together with the FM wave from 17 to one end of a long line 5. At the other end, the oscillations are applied to a mixer 7, and the resulting beat frequency is passed to an aerial 11, with if desired a frequency multiplier 9 interposed.
