Abstract

811,381. Refrigerating. V. D. M. SPINNERS Ltd. Oct. 2, 1957 [Aug. 2, 1956; May 24, 1957], Nos. 23795/56 and 16539/57. Class 29 A heat pump system comprises compressor a and condenser m coupled to an evaporator f located in a refrigerator or other thermally insulated enclosure g and an evaporator h external to the refrigerator. The evaporators may be in parallel branches of the refrigerant circuit or in series. In the former case flow of refrigerant is controlled by separate expansion valves e in each branch and by solenoid cut-off valves d in each branch, or a single solenoid in the refrigerator branch, or by a distributer valve at the entry junction of the branches, or by varying the adjustment of the expansion valve in the refrigerator branch; in each case the variable valves are controlled by the temperature of the refrigerator chamber. In a preferred cabinet arrangement forming part of a kitchen unit, the compressor and condenser are immersed in a water tank housed in a lower compartment 6, the external evaporator coil 7 is housed in a central compartment 1, while the refrigerator cabinet 5 is located above the central compartment. The central compartment 1 is divided by partitions 2, 3 and 4 into four chambers. Access to the upper chambers is through ducts 14, 15 leading through the wall of the building containing the heat pump and openings 12, 13 in the cabinet wall. The ducts and openings are closed by flaps 17 operated by a linkage 18. A blower 8 draws air from one upper chamber, through an opening 10 over the evaporator coils 7, through an opening 11a and into the upper chamber. By arrangement of the flaps 17 the air may be from outside or inside the building and reflected from the evaporator to outside or inside the building. The external evaporator coil 7 may be located at the top of the cabinet.
