Abstract
Symmetrical monomethine cyanine or complex cyanine dyes in which the methine group may carry an alkyl, aryl or benzyl group, are prepared by condensing a quaternary salt of the formula: <FORM:0811156/IV (c)/1> (wherein Y is O, S or Se, R2 is alkyl, alkenyl or aryl, X is an anion and Z completes a 5-membered heterocyclic ring which may carry substituents including a doubly-bonded heterocyclic azole group), with an acid anhydride of the formula (R1-CH2-CO)2O, wherein R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or benzyl, in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent. Examples are given of the production of simple cyanine dyes wherein the methine group is unsubstituted or carries a methyl, ethyl, phenyl or benzyl substituent by the reaction of acetic anhydride, propionic anhydride, butyric anhydride, phenyl acetic anhydride or phenyl propionic anhydride respectively with quaternary salts such as 2-methylmercapto-benzthiazole dimethyl sulphate, 2-methylmercapto-benzoxazole dimethyl sulphate or 2-methylmercaptobenzselenazole dimethyl sulphate, in the presence of triethylamine. An example is also given of the preparation of a complex cyanine dye by refluxing [2-(3-methylbenzthiazole)] [5-(2 - methylmercapto - 3 - ethyl - thiazolidone - 4)] merocyanine - p - toluenesulphonate with acetic anhydride in the presence of triethylamine.
