Abstract

Polymethine dyes of the general formula <FORM:0789136/IV (b)/1> wherein R is allyl or an alkyl group of up to 5 carbon atoms, m is 0 or 1, n is 2 or 3, and X completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus, are prepared by condensing a quaternary heterocyclic nitrogen compound having a reactive a - or g -methyl group with g -anilino-acralaniline hydrochloride or glutaconic aldehyde dianil hydrochloride in the presence of acetic anhydride and condensing the product with malonic dinitrile, or by first reacting malonic dinitrile with g -anilino-acralaniline or glutaconic aldehyde dianil and acetylating, and then condensing the product with the heterocyclic quaternary compound. Examples are given of the production of dyes wherein R is methyl or ethyl, and X completes a 2- or 4-quinoline, benzthiazole, tetrahydrobenzthiazole, naphthathiazole, 4 : 5-diphenyl thiazole, thiazoline, benzselenazole, benzimidazole or pyridine nucleus.
