Abstract

Cyanine dyes are described having the formul <FORM:0736266/IV (c)/1> or <FORM:0736266/IV (c)/2> wherein R and R1 represent alkyl or aralkyl groups, R5 represents an alkyl group, n and d are 0 or 1, Q represents a nitrogen atom or a methine group, D completes a substituted or unsubstituted benzene ring, X represents an acid radical and Z completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring. Examples of dyes are given in which R and R1 are methyl or ethyl, R5 is methyl and Z completes a nucleus of the 2- or 4-quinoline, benzthiazole, or benzoxazole series. The dyes may be made by condensing a compound of the formula <FORM:0736266/IV (c)/3> with a quaternary ammonium salt having a reactive alkyl-, aralkyl- or aryl-mercapto or b -acylarylamino vinyl group in the case of the dyes of formula I or with a p-dialkylamino aromatic aldehyde in the case of the styryl dyes of formula V. These condensations are preferably carried out in the presence of a basic condensing agent, and an inert solvent may also be used. A list of values of Z is given including 4-(2-thienyl)thiazole, 41-methoxythianaphtheno - 71 : 61 : 4 : 5 - thiazole and 1-iso-quinoline.
