Abstract

Rhodacyanine dyes are described having the general formula <FORM:0837674/IV(c)/1> wherein D and D1 complete heterocyclic nuclei, R and R1 are alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or carboxybenzyl groups, R11 is a substituted hydroxyl group, Z and Y or Y and Z respectively are sulphur, and an N-alkyl, N-aryl, N-aralkyl or N-allyl group, m, n and n1 are 0 or 1, A is an alkyl or aralkyl group and X is an anion. The dyes may be prepared by alkylating a merocarbocyanine dye containing a 2-thio-thiazolidone nucleus, and condensing the resulting alkylmercapto derivative with a heterocyclic quaternary salt containing in the 2-position a methyl or a b -methyl-b -alkoxy (or aralkoxy) vinyl group. The merocarbocyanines may be prepared by reacting a heterocyclic quaternary salt containing a 2-b -alkylmercapto-b -alkyl- (or aralkyl) vinyl group with a 2-thio-thiazolidone derivative, or by reacting a 4- or 5- (or alkyl (or aralkyl) ethylidene)-2-thio-thiazolidone with a heterocylic quaternary salt containing a 2-alkyl mercapto group. Examples are given of the preparation of merocarbocyanines from quaternary salts of benzthiazoles, thiazolines or naphthathiazoles and wherein the methine chain carries a methyl, ethyl, benzyl or b -phenylethyl substituent (A), and of the conversion of these into rhodacyanines of the above formula wherein D1 completes a benzthiazole, benzoxazole, benzselenazole, 4 : 5-diphenyl-thiazoline or naphthathiazole nucleus, R1 is ethyl or p-carboxybenzyl, R11 is methoxy or benzyloxy and m is 0 or 1. Y or Z (whichever is not sulphur) may be N-ethyl, N-n-heptyl or N-allyl. Specification 685,390 also is referred to.
