Abstract
811,096. - Gravity-separation apparatus. WALKER, V. Nov. 7, 1957, No. 34719/57. Class 46. A separator for mixtures of liquid and solid matter of greater specific gravity comprises a supporting structure, a tank pivotably mounted on the structure and having an inlet at its upper part for the mixture, an outlet for separated liquid and an outlet at its lower part for separated solid matter, the tank being adapted to assume a first position of rest when filled with liquid only and a second tilted position of rest when a predetermined amount of solid matter has accumulated at its lower part, and means coupled to the tank and operable by its tilting to close its solid matter outlet in the first position and open its solidmatter outlet in the second position. A quantity of water and sand or grit is fed to a shoot 4, Fig. 3, of a preferably conical tank 1 which is carried by pivots 2 in blocks 3 on a fixed frame (not shown), the pivots being offset laterally from the vertical centre-line of the tank. When a predetermined quantity of solids has settled at the bottom of the tank, it tilts into the position shown in Fig. 3, and in so doing an abutment 13 on the tank tilts a lever 10 clockwise about a fixed fulcrum 11, the lever, through linkage 15, 16, opening a valve 18 normally closing the lower end of the tank to permit the solids to discharge. Water at the same time spills over the open upper edge of the tank at B, preferably via a shoot 5. When (after discharge of solids), the tank contains water only, a counterweight 14 restores the tank and lever to the untilted position. The position of the counterweight is chosen to satisfy this condition. Mixture may be fed to the tank continuously, in which case it tilts periodically. For certain solids a vertical baffle 6, Fig. 2, extending across and from near the top to near the bottom of the tank and a horizontal baffle 7 extending from the top of baffle 6 to the left and leaving gaps 8, 9, are provided. Two or more tanks may be arranged in series where the liquid contains two or more solids of different specific gravity.
