810,988. Mould and core materials. HARBOROUGH CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. May 22, 1957 [June 26, 1956], No. 19704/56. Class 83(1). A moulding mixture comprises sand, drying- oil and an accelerating agent consisting of, or comprising, potassium-permanganate. The drying-oil preferably consists of one or more oils with conjugated double bonds, such as tung, oiticica or linseed, which may have been pretreated by blowing or heat-polymerized, and may contain a proportion of metallic drier, the proportion of oil to sand usually being between 1 and 3 per cent. The amount of accelerator will depend upon sand and atmospheric temperature, mould thickness and desired hardening rate. In specific examples the mixture consists of 98 per cent silica-sand with 2 per cent of oil, the latter consisting of 94 per cent of a mixture of 85 per cent linseed oil and 15 per cent tung-oil, blown together and containing as drier 4 per cent of a 30 per cent lead-naphthenate solution, and 2 per cent of a 6 per cent cobalt-naphthenate solution, both in white spirit. The accelerating agent was 0.1 per cent of a 30 per cent potassium-permanganate and 70 per cent pulverized ball-clay mixture.
