Abstract
A 2,6-dialkoxy-4-alkylphenol is incorporated in natural or synthetic rubber to inhibit attack by ozone in an amount comprising 2 to 5 per cent by weight of the rubber. Preferably the alkoxy and alkyl groups each contain 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and the two alkoxy groups may be different. Numerous examples of inhibitors are specified, including 2,6-dimethoxy-4-methylphenol, 2,6 - dimethoxy - 4n - propylphenol, 2,6 - diethoxy - 4 - isopropylphenol, 2,6 - di - isopropoxy - 4 - butylphenol, and 2 - methoxy-6-ethoxy-4-methylphenol. The inhibitor may be used in association with a microcrystalline or other paraffin wax and/or with a known antioxidant such as phenyl - beta - naphthylamine, 6 - phenyl - 2,2,4 - trimethyl - 1,2 - dihydroquinoline, 2,21 - methylene - bis - (4 - methyl methyl - 6 - tert. - butyl - phenol), 2,6 - di - tert.-butyl-p-cresol, and the reaction product of acetone and diphenylamine. The antiozonant is non-staining and may be used in light-coloured natural rubber, and in butadiene-styrene, butadiene-acrylonitrile, and butadiene-isobutylene copolymers, "Thiokol" (Registered Trade Mark), polychloroprene, and silicone rubber.
