Abstract

810,336. Nestable containers and boxes. ZARGES, W. Dec. 27, 1956, No. 39296/56. Classes 18 and 66. A nestable container has a removable cover, the surface area of which is greater than that of the bottom of the container, the part or parts forming the cover being capable of being accommodated in the space left in the interior of the container when a similar container is nested therein. As shown in Fig. 5, the cover 4<SP>1</SP>, which may be of metal, rests on an inwardly directed corrugation 3 extending around the container 1. In Fig. 4 the cover is in three parts 4<SP>1</SP> hinged together, the central part having an upper eye 19 through which straps 17 and 18 are secured together to hold the lid in place. This lid can be folded up and placed in the bottom of the container. In Fig. 3 the lid comprises two parts 4, 5 connected by a central hinge, the hinge having means whereby the hinge pins 14 can be moved axially outwards through the side walls of the container to lock the hinge therewith, the other ends of the parts 4 and 5 having lugs 12 that engage in corresponding apertures in the end walls of the container. To the upper surface of the cover parts 4 and 5 wooden strips 7 may be secured and there may also be some small wooden blocks 9 arranged such that the base of a stacked container will fit between and be held by these blocks. When the lid is removed it is folded on itself and placed in the bottom of the container and a second container can then be nested therein. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 7, the corrugation 3 is absent but the containers have handles 25, 26, that can be swung inwards to act as supports for a stacked container. The cover, which is below said handles when swung inwards, may then comprise two sheets 29, 30, Fig. 8, of flexible material, the outer longitudinal edges of which are secured to the container walls as at 32 and the inner longitudinal edges of which are adapted to be connected to each other by a cord or wire passing through eyelets 33. The covers 29, 30, may be reinforced by strip like inserts 37. Alternatively a single sheet only is used, said sheet being secured to one wall and removably connected to the other walls, for example, by a slide fastener.
