Abstract
Dinitroalkyl phenols of the formula <FORM:0810239/IV (b)/1> where the alkyl group contains 6-12 carbon atoms are made by sulphonating at a temperature between 25 DEG and 45 DEG C. an o-alkyl phenol in which the alkyl group contains 6-12 carbon atoms, with 88 per cent to 98 per cent sulphuric acid in an amount to provide a molar ratio of said acid to said phenol from 2.2 : 1 to 6 : 1, adding the resulting sulphonated mixture, preferably with agitation, to an aqueous 25 per cent to 50 per cent sodium nitrate solution maintained at a temperature between 70 DEG and about 100 DEG C., the molar ratio of sodium nitrate to o-alkyl phenol being from 2 : 1 to 4 : 1, reacting it therewith, and separating the resulting dinitroalkyl phenol. Alkyl phenols mentioned are o-n-hexyl-, o-2-ethylbutyl-o-n-heptyl-, o-1 : 1 : 3-trimethylbutyl-, o-n-octyl-, o-1-methylheptyl-, o-n-nonyl-, o-isononyl-, o-2 : 4 : 4-trimethylpentyl -, o - 3 : 5 : 5 - trimethylhexyl-, o-decyl-, o-dodecyl-, and o-isodecyl-phenols, as well as mixtures of o-alkyl-phenols such as commercial capryl phenol which contains o-1-methylheptylphenol and o-octylphenol. Examples are given.
