Abstract
<PICT:0810028/IV (a)/1> A die head for the extrusion of organic thermoplastic sheet comprises three coaxial parts; an internally-cylindrical housing 12 forming an extension of the outlet 10 of a plastics extruder or pump, a core 16 fixedly spaced from the housing to provide an annular passage 30 and to distribute plastic material substantially uniformly therein, and a crown 20 secured to and spanning the core 16 so that between the adjacent faces of the crown and housing is formed a radial passage 26 into which the core or crown or both divert the plastic material from the annular passage 30. The crown is rigid at the centre and is made yieldable near its circumference so that by adjusting pressure and tension means the width of the passage 26 can be altered. An annular groove 41 and radial grooves (not shown) are machined in a flange 40 on the crown, to make it yieldable under the action of screws 47, 48, threading into radial bars 45 attached to the rigid part of the crown and into the flange 40. The crown may be heated by heating fluid passing through a passage 52 in a ring carried by the bars 45. The core 16 is rigidly attached to the housing 12 by the perforated flange 17, and the crown 20 is accurately centred on the core by dowel pins 21 and is secured thereto by the threaded pilot shaft 22 and its lock-nut 23.
