Abstract
1,271,559. Extrusion dies. ETHYL CORP. 13 Nov., 1969, No. 55704/69, Heading B5A. A tube-extrusion die head, particularly intended for the production of thermoplastic film, comprises a stepped housing 11 and a correspondingly stepped mandrel 12 which define a material passageway 18 therebetween, the passageway being adjustable at an annular shoulder 14 by the provision of an annular restrictor 30 reciprocable axially of the die head by rotation of cap screws 35. The die head is connected to an extruder by means of a threaded bore 21, and material passes to passageway 18 via radial bores 23, formed either as shown, in a one-piece mandrel, or in a separate mandrel portion. Restrictor 30 is adjusted to remove weld lines in the material and the thickness of the extrudate is adjusted on radial movement of ring 43 by rotation of bolts 46 after screws 44 have been loosened. Mandrel 12 may have a conduit for pressure fluid to inflate the extrudate. Ring 43 may be heated by circulation of, e.g., steam, hot oil, in annular hollows 51, chamber 52 on housing 11 may carry heating or cooling media and mandrel 12 may be heated, e.g. by steam, hot oil, or electric strip or rod heaters.
