Abstract

809,758. Automatic control systems. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. Feb. 26, 1957, No. 6436/57. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXIX] In an automatic control system including a hydraulic servomotor under the control of an hydraulic control valve and a negative feedback potentiometer operated by the control valve, the potentiometer is provided with a dead zone over which no change in feed-back occurs while the control valve moves over its dead zone. In a modification of the aircraft automatic pitch control system described in Specification 690,982 in which an hydraulic servomotor operating the elevators is under the control of an hydraulic control valve adjusted by an electromagnetically-controlled clutch energized by a signal corresponding to pitch deviation, a feed-back potentiometer 21, Fig. 3, operated by the control valve (not shown), is provided with a brass pin 20 having a spring- loaded concave tip 19 of previous metal which short-circuits a few turns of the potentiometer to provide the dead zone. Correct location of this zone is facilitated by mounting pin 20 eccentrically in a bush 23 which can be rotated and then locked in any position by nut 26 Specifications 691,027, [Group XXIV], also is referred to.
