724,516. Automatic control systems. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. May 16, 1952 [May 26, 1951], No. 12389/51. Class 38 (4). In a servo system applied to elevator control by an aircraft automatic pilot, a gyro vertical (not shown) detecting pitch is associated with a potentiometer pick-off P2, a D.C. signal from which is applied to the input terminals A, B of an electronic amplifier 7 the output of which, from the terminals C, D, controls the energization of the winding 12 of an electromagnetic slipping clutch 13 between a continuously driven member 14 and a control valve 45 controlling a hydraulic servomotor 51 correcting the position of the aircraft elevator so that pitch is maintained at a value determined by the setting of a potentiometer P3 supplying a second D.C. signal to amplifier 7 in opposition to the signal from potentiometer P2. Control valve 45 is maintained at a position corresponding to the pitch error by a D.C. follow-up signal which is derived from a potentiometer P4 associated with the control valve, and applied to the input of amplifier 7. The speed of servomotor 51 is thus dependent on the pitch error and a followup signal dependent on servomotor speed is derived through a condenser C1 from a potentiometer P5 associated with the servomotor, and applied to the input of amplifier 7.
