Abstract
Graphite is contacted with uranium hexafluoride vapour to form a product which is admixed with polytetrafluorethylene to produce a moulding composition from which seals resistant to UF6 vapour under conditions of rubbing friction may be made. Granular graphite is degassed by heating in an evacuated vessel at 100 DEG C. and cooled. UF6 vapour is introduced and left in contact for 24 hours, and the product is ground. Massive or lumpy graphite requires several days' exposure to UF6 vapour.ALSO:A mouldable composition comprises an admixture of polytetrafluorethylene and the product of treating graphitic carbon with uranium hexafluoride vapour (see Group III). The ground graphite product and an equal weight of ground polytetrafluorethylene are intimately mixed, first by hand, and then by mill. The mixture is moulded at 2 1/2 tons per square inch, and the strength of the mouldings is improved by heating at 380-420 DEG C., preferably 400 DEG C. for 3-4 hours; this heating may be effected in the mould after pressing. Seals resistant to UF6 vapour under conditions of rubbing friction may be made from the composition.
