Abstract
Linear polyamides are dissolved in solvents consisting of 50-90 per cent by weight of resorcinol in water or 50-80 per cent by weight of catechol in water by mixing the polyamides with said solvents and heating to a temperature between 25 DEG and 90 DEG C. in the case of the resorcinol-water solvent and between 40 DEG and 90 DEG C. in the case of the catechol-water solvent. Specified polyamides are polycaprolactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polytetramethylene adipamide and polytetramethylene sebacamide. The solutions may also contain plasticizers, dyes, pigments, diluents, resins, waxes, cellulose derivatives, water repellants, flame repellants and delustrants. Polyamide filaments may be made by extruding the solutions into non-solvents for the polyamides, e.g. water, alcohols containing up to five carbon atoms and aqueous sodium hydroxide. In the examples: (I), (II) and (III) polyhexamethylene adipamide is dissolved in resorcinol-water mixtures and the solutions are extruded into water or aqueous sodium hydroxide; (IV) polyhexamethylene adipamide is dissolved in a catechol-water mixture and the solution is extruded into methyl alcohol or water; (V) polycaprolactam is dissolved in a resorcinol-water mixture and the solution is extruded into water or methyl alcohol. The solutions may also be formed into solid articles and films and used as lacquers for coating and impregnating. Specification 461,237, [Group IV], and U.S.A.
