Abstract

Solutions of polyamides in molten chloral hydrate or solutions of molten chloral hydrate in alkanols containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms are used for coating wood, metal, glass, wire and regenerated cellulose. The solutions may also contain plasticizers, dyes, pigments, diluents, resins, cellulose derivatives, waxes, waterrepellents, lustre modifying agents and flame repellents. In the examples, solutions of (I) polyhexamethylene adipamidea nd (III) poly S -caprolactam in molten chloral hydrates are applied as thin coatings to glass and solvents evaporated. Specification 461,237 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,071,250 and 2,071,253 are referred to.ALSO:A solution of a synthetic linear polyamide containing, as an integral part of the main polymer chain, recurring groups of the general formula <FORM:0838012/IV (a)/1> where R is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and which groups are separated by an average number of carbon atoms of at least two, in a solvent consisting of molten chloral hydrate or a solution consisting of molten chloral hydrate in an alkanol containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms. Specified polyamides are polytetramethylene and polyhexamethylene adipamide suberamide and sebacamide and poly e -caprolactam. In the examples: polyhexamethylene adipamide is dissolved in (I) and (II) chloral hydrate, (V) chloral hydrate/methanol, (VI) chloral hydrate/ethanol, (VII) chloral hydrate/isopropanol, whilst in Examples (III) and (IV) poly e -caprolactam is dissolved in chloral hydrate. The solutions may contain plasticizers, dyes, pigments, diluents, resins, cellulose derivatives, waxes, water repellents and flame repellents and may be used as coatings or extruded into coagulating baths to form coatings. Specification 461,237 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,071,250 and 2,071,253 are referred to.
