Abstract

Linear polyamides are dissolved in solutions of not less than 70 per cent by weight chloral hydrate in water by heating a mixture thereof to a temperature between 25 DEG C. and the boiling point of the solvent. Specified polyamides are polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polytetramethylene adipamide, polytetramethylene sebacamide and polycaprolactam. The solutions may also contain plasticizers, dyes, pigments, diluents, resins, cellulose derivatives, waxes, water-repellents and delustrants. Polyamide filaments may be made by extruding the solutions into non-solvents for the polyamides, e.g. water, alcohols containing up to 5 carbon atoms and aqueous sodium hydroxide. The examples describe the preparation of solutions of polyhexamethylene adipamide and the extrusion thereof into aqueous alcohol or water. The solutions may also be formed into solid articles and films and used as lacquers for coating and impregnating. Specification 461,237, [Group IV], and U.S.A.
