Abstract

808,749. Fluid pressure brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Sept. 28, 1956 [June 9, 1956], No. 29644/56. Class 103 (1). A fluid pressure operated brake, which as shown comprises a disc 29 gripped between pads 26 and 28 in a caliper support 25, is applied by pressure generated by a pump 3 and governed by a pedal-operated control valve 4, the increasing fluid pressure passed by valve 4 acting progressively upon a piston 14 in a cylinder 13 against a spring 15 until it closes contacts 16, 17. A solenoid 23 is thereupon energized so as to shut off passage of fluid through a valve 12. Simultaneously with the above operation, fluid is bled away from the actuating cylinder 8 back to the reservoir 2 through an adjustable valve 10. It is claimed that more efficient braking is carried out by such progressive and limited application of pressure. In a further embodiment, the bleeder valve is controlled electrically automatically in dependence on the temperature and heating of the brake disc as determined by a suitable thermostat.
