Abstract

808,676. Collapsible boxes. HAMLIN METAL PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Aug. 10, 1956, No. 24581/56. Class 18. A collapsible metal box has sides and ends hinged to flanges on the base, the sides having hinges enabling them to be interlocked with or released from the respective flanges. The ends 18 have conventional hinge connections 19 with base flanges 15 and have vertical edge channels 26, Fig. 6, into which fit angle strips 25 on the edges of the sides 23. Lugs 33 on the ends prevent movement inwards of the sides when the box is erect. The lower ends of the strips 25 have notches 32 for interlocking engagement with base flanges 16, and the side hinges are arranged to permit vertical and swinging movement of the sides to disengage the notches and permit the upper side edges to pass under the lugs 33. In one embodiment the side hinges consist of cranked rods 31 each having one end 31B pivoted in an aperture in a flange 15 and the other 31A in a bush 31C fixed to the respective side. In another embodiment, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown) straight pintles secured to the sides operate in inverted L shaped slots in the flanges 15. The side walls fold within the base flanges and the end walls rest on the flanges 16, Fig. 7. Feet 28 are provided, shaped to engage an identical box below to facilitate stacking. All the box walls are corrugated for strength.
