A polyethylene bottle capsule has an upper cap part 1, a lower part 3 and a tear-off strip 5 offset downwardly at two or more points so that lugs 6 form when the strip is torn and enable the device to form a gas-tight closure when replaced as a temporary closure. In a modification, Fig. 5, a plug-part 8 with ribs 9 and bulging bottom 10 enters the bottle mouth and the space 11 is closed by a polystyrol disc 13 fitted in an annular groove 12.
