808,299. Automatic torque control systems; magnetic powder couplings. ELEKTROMECHANIK G.m.b.H. Nov. 30, 1956 [Dec. 1, 1955], No. 36755/56. Classes 35 and 38 (4). The maximum torque transmissible by a magnetic powder clutch or brake is maintained by increasing the magnetic field as the powder wears, the electrical resistance of the powder and hence pressure set up in the powder by the field being maintained constant. As shown, the inner and outer parts 11 and 10 of a clutch are insulated electrically at the bearing 8 and the current through powder 9 sets up a voltage drop across resistance 15 which controls the output of an amplifier 13 supplying the magnetic winding 12 of the clutch. Alternatively, the current through powder 9 may be indicated on a meter and the current through winding 12 adjusted manually.
