808,285. Mineral-mining apparatus. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1955 [Nov. 18, 1954], No. 32572/55. Class 68(1) For enabling a remotely controlled mining machine 10 having rotary cutters 18 for forming a bore through through which the machine can pass to be guided within the stratum to be mined there is provided an earth-strata-indicating system. The system comprises a transverse, horizontally position drum cutter 22, 24 that is driven by an electric motor 32, 36 connected to a power supply having measuring means 60, 58 adapted to indicate at a remote location 62 the prevailing power consumption. Thus by observing the variation in power consumption as the drum cutter passes from one stratum to another appropriate steps can be taken to control the direction of advance of the machine. The drum cutter is mounted behind the rotary cutter means in such a manner as to remove the cusps between the zones mined out by the rotary cutters 18. Preferably an upper and lower drum cutter is provided, each cutter being part of an independent control system. The drum cutters are provided with radial teeth of different length whereby wear due to engagement with hard peripheral layers of earth strata is concentrated on only a portion of the teeth at first.
