Abstract

The exposed surface of a body of thermal insulation material is sealed and protected with a surface finish which will withstand surface temperatures as low as -70 DEG F. by applying to the outer surface of the insulation material a layer of a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a rubbery copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethylacrylate as a binder component and a major portion by weight of filler particles, e.g. whiting, sand and asbestine, and removing water from the layer of composition to deposit the binder as a coalesced matrix encasing the filler and at the same time to bond the composition to the exposed surface of the body of insulating material. A suitable copolymer is one comprising 55 per cent methyl methacrylate and 45 per cent ethyl acrylate. The composition may also contain small amounts of the following ingredients: the sodium salt of ortho-phenyl phenol, boric acid, sodium pentachlorophenate, the polymerized sodium or potassium salts of alkyl naphthalene sulphonic acids, sodium polyacrylate, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, a silicone antifoam, tributyl phosphate, octyl alcohol and titanium dioxide. The thermal insulating materials to which the compositions are applied may be of the corkboard, glass fibre or foamed glass type.ALSO:A coating composition for thermal insulation material comprises an aqueous dispersion of a rubbery copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate as a binder component, and a major portion by weight of filler particles, e.g. whiting, sand and asbestine.
