Abstract

Flexible, self-supporting detergent films of substantially uniform thickness comprise (a) a water-soluble hydroxyethylcellulose or an alkali metal (e.g. sodium or potassium) or ammonium salt of carboxymethylcellulose, preferably in amounts of 33-67 parts by weight of the composition, (b) a saturated acyclic alcohol, preferably in amounts of 15-30 parts by weight as plasticizer, and (c) an organic detergent, preferably in amounts of 25-55 parts by weight, and having a pH of 7-10. For ingredient (a), sodium carboxymethylcellulose having a degree of substitution of 0,65-0,95 is preferred. (b) may suitably comprise glycerol; di-glycerol; glycerol a -monomethyl ether or chlorhydrin; 1:2:6-hexanetriol; ethylene, propylene or 2:3-butylene glycol; 2-nitro-2-methyl-1:3-propanediol; 2:2-dihydroxydiethylamine; or 2-hydroxyethylamine. Suitable detergents (c) are soap, sulphonated long chain amide derivatives, alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, and alkylaryl sulphonates; non-ionic detergents and cationic detergents such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide or p-tert.-octylphenoxyethenoxyethyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride may be used but are less preferred. The compositions may also include an additional non-ionic surfaceactive agent, suitably a polyoxyalkylene ether of a mono-ester of a polyhydric alcohol having a viscosity of 200-500 cs. Other materials which may be included are clays such as bentonite, kieselguhr, diatomaceous earth, and talc, hydrated aluminium or magnesium silicate, alkali metal carbonates and pyrophosphates, and borax. The films are made by dissolving first (a), then (b) and (c) and any optional ingredients in 2-10 times the weight of water at 70 DEG -100 DEG F., ethanol, isopropanol or tert.-butanol being added if required to prevent sudsing. The solution is then spread continously or batchwise into a layer 0,002 to 0,08 inches thick on a surface which suitably consists of a glass or metal coated surface which is itself coated with polytetrafluorethylene, and which is heated to 130 DEG -300 DEG F., preferably 150 DEG to 200 DEG F. The film having a thickness of 0,001-0,008 inches is stripped off the surface when the water content has fallen to 5-10% by weight, and may then be cut to the required dimensions for binding into booklets or for use in dispensing devices. Specification 645,752 is referred to.ALSO:Flexible, self-supporting detergent films of substantially uniform thickness comprise (a) a water-soluble hydroxyethyl cellulose or an alkali-metal (e.g. sodium or potassium) or ammonium salt of carboxymethylcellulose, preferably in amounts of 33-67 parts by weight of the composition, (b) a saturated acyclic alcohol, preferably in amounts of 15-30 parts by weight as plasticizer, and (c) an organic detergent, preferably in amounts of 25-55 parts by weight, and having a pH of 7-10.
