Abstract

807,983. Respiratory appliances. SWEARINGEN, J. J., and McFADDEN, E. B. April 24, 1957, No. 13057/57. Class 81 (2). An oxygen mask for use in an aircraft is mounted in a container from which it is automatically presented to a passenger on a sudden fall in ambient pressure. A base plate 2 carries a band spring 6, fixed on the base plate by means of a mounting block and which has the mask 20 attached to a tab 6a at its free end. This spring is normally held by a pivoted trigger 10 which is released by withdrawal of a pin 12 by a lever 14 actuated by an aneroid 13. When the aneroid expands on decrease in ambient pressure the pin 12 is withdrawn and a spring 11 throws the trigger 10 round to lift a stop 7, on the spring 6, clear of a pin 8 and allow the spring to fly outwards, carrying the mask with it. The mask is of flexible, rubberized fabric, so as to conform to the features, and carries an adhesive strip around its periphery, so that it can be held on to the face. A protective strip, covering the adhesive during storage, is gripped by a clip 17 so as to be stripped off when the mask is extended towards the passenger.
